Body careLymphatic drainage: what it is and when it helps
“Lymphatic massage” and “lymphatic drainage” are the same thing. People usually arrive at it by one of two routes — because of cellulite, or because their legs are heavy and swollen by evening. For the first we have a separate article. This one is about the second: what the lymphatic system is, why the body holds on to fluid, and what a massage can realistically do.
What the lymphatic system is
Besides blood, the body carries lymph — a clear fluid that collects excess water and waste from the tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. It runs through fine vessels and lymph nodes.
The difference from blood matters: lymph has no pump of its own. The heart does not move it. The muscles, breathing and the movement of the body do.
Why fluid builds up
When the body does not move enough, lymph slows down. That is why swelling appears in familiar situations: a whole day on a chair, long hours standing, a long flight or car journey, hot days, certain days of the cycle.
The result is a feeling of heaviness, ankles that look nothing like they did in the morning, rings that feel tight, and a body that looks puffier than it is.
What the massage does
Lymphatic drainage is a slow, light, rhythmic massage with a set direction — towards the lymph nodes. Lymph vessels run just under the skin and close under strong pressure, so force here does not help, it gets in the way. If you expect firm rubbing, this is not it.
After a session the swelling usually goes down, the legs feel lighter, and the treated area often measures smaller. Many people say they sleep better that night.
What it does not do
It does not melt fat. It does not “flush out toxins” — that is an advertising phrase, not a description of the process. It is not a treatment for a disease.
And the effect is not permanent. If the cause is a sedentary day, it will repeat tomorrow. The massage helps the body deal with the consequences; movement between sessions decides how long the difference lasts.
When to see a doctor first
Persistent swelling that does not go down even after rest. Swelling in one leg only, especially if it is warm or painful. Swelling that appeared suddenly. A known heart, kidney or vein condition.
These are not cases for a massage therapist. Ask your doctor first — we will wait for the answer.
How often
For seasonal swelling or after a long journey, one or two sessions are usually enough. If the heaviness is daily, a series of a few sessions helps, followed by upkeep. How much shows after the first one is not promised in advance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between lymphatic massage and lymphatic drainage?
There is none — both names describe the same massage.
Does it hurt?
No. The pressure is light and the rhythm calm. Most people relax, and some fall asleep.
Can I have it after a long flight?
Yes, that is one of the most common reasons. If after the flight you have swelling in one leg only or pain in the calf, see a doctor first.
How long is a session?
With us the sculpting lymphatic drainage takes 90 minutes.
